Charley's Treasure Hunt

In the back of your Charley's Columbia Backyard children's book, you will see the "Charley's Treasure Hunt" seek-and-find page. Here are the answers:

When you explore your home town, you
must "open your eyes, your ears and your heart" to become a part of
your surroundings and fully appreciate them. When you visit a Charley
Favorite, don't just pass through. Dress the part, as Charley and
Bernard did, and imagine. Watch for special movements and habits of
animals, smell the scents around you, read the inscriptions of exhibits
and statues, listen for the sounds around you. The Advanced Treasure Hunt ...
Now search beyond the fence of your own Columbia backyard to hunt for the answers to these questions:
- On the State House grounds,
Charley and Bernard become soldiers at the foot of a general. Who is
the general? (Hint: He is riding high on a horse.)
- Also
on on the State House grounds, Charley tells Bernard to "touch these
bronze faces of African-Americans that tell a story of achievement and
pain." Name some of the faces that you recognize on this
African-American Monument.
- At
the State Museum, Charley and Bernard hunted mastodons in the dark.
What is a mastadon and in what time period did they tromp through our region?
- What's the name of the park "that's over 300 acres grand" on the Saluda River?
- Bream are plentiful in Lake Murray, but what is considered the state fish for South Carolina?
- At
Congaree National Park, Charley talks about "creatures that slither and
crawl." Name some of these creatures that are found at this park.
- At
Riverbanks Zoo, the boys "became beasts in the jungle among the tigers,
zebras and toucans." In what part of the world can these animals be
found?
- At
Fort Jackson, the boys were startled by a "blaring bugle call." How
many times per day does the bugle sound? A.) 1-5 B.) 6-10 C.) 11-15
- When exploring EDDIE(TM) at EdVenture, Charley encouraged Bernard to "see all that's inside." When you visit EdVenture and explore this 40-foot "patient," what sounds do you hear?
- Charley
says that after each show at the Columbia Marionette Theatre, you can
see how puppets are made behind the scenes. Approximately how long does it take a puppet-maker to create a single puppet?
